Burning light within my soul, I stain my face on scorching coal, The sky is bruised, I am too, I'll fight for me and not for you. Sugar bombs your wicked toys, Won't break my heart to hear your voice, Morning rise, evening fall, Soon as I stand I break, and crawl. But still I'm gone, And you tell me I'm so wrong, The way I move, Is clearly just too much for you. Just to hear your voice I thought it fine, But now I'm left unsatisfied, Left your song in my head, I've figured out your plans instead. Set my eyes on your land, I'm given now to make my stand, I've paid my due to see this through, Now where's the other side of you? But still I'm gone, And you tell me I'm so wrong, The way I move, Is clearly just too much, But still I'm gone, And you tell me I'm so wrong, The way I move, Is clearly just too much for you.

Well I know this girl she sells hot cookies, she sells 'em night and day, First time I get some money, I'm gonna head right up her way, Gonna try some of that, I'm gonna try some of that, First time I get some money you know I'm gonna try some of that. And it makes no difference who you are, or where you may come from, She'll meet you out in the street at night, You know she's gonna sell you some, Gonna try some of that, I'm gonna try some of that, First time I get some money you know I'm gonna try some of that. And it's good for misery in your back, it's good for corns and bunions, She said "son, if you like that, I got a fresh batch in my oven!", Gonna try some of that, I'm gonna try some of that, First time I get some money you know I'm gonna try some of that. A bow legged man come in last night and folks hop outta the way, He didn't stay but five minutes and he came out walking straight, Gonna try some of that, I'm gonna try some of that, First time I get some money you know I'm gonna try, Some sure good cookies I'm talkin' about!

The Angel 02:42
I dreamt a dream! What can it mean? And that I was a maiden Queen Guarded by an Angel mild: Witless woe was ne'er beguiled! And I wept both night and day, And he wiped my tears away; And I wept both day and night, And hid from him my heart's delight. So he took his wings, and fled; Then the morn blushed rosy red. I dried my tears, and armed my fears With ten thousand shields and spears. Soon my Angel came again; I was armed, he came in vain; For the time of youth was fled, And grey hairs were on my head.

You could leave me out in dessert sands, You could send me out to sea, You could hold a gun up to my head, I'm still more trouble to me. My mind is like your steel machine that, Races us to sin, It never gives me peace until, It's worn my soul thin. You think that danger in this world is, Out there for us to find, You spend your life running from, The demons in your mind. I drag myself along this road, In hope of finding life, But time's abuse, has stolen me quietly, And left me here to, waste.
5.
Find my soul in this cobbled road, As my feet touch ground, And though you still call for me, I won't hear a sound, Made up my mind to travel far away, Follow this road contended on my own. Erasing voices from my mind, Each step I forget, I don't care for them now, I won't turn my head, Walking this track with sunshine in my eyes, All I am is this journey to the sky. Chasing visions through this world, Each one has left me bare, Saw the hands that made my dreams, Animating my despair, In the depths of my soul is an image I cannot receive, There is good in this world, So you'd have me believe. The path that started on, Has gone and left me here, As sure as time goes on, Is hope degraded into fear, With each step that I take never seems to get me there, And it's the seasons of myself which colour happiness with pain. But so long as I maintain, This song of my self, Giving rhythm to the pain, Creating new worlds, How strange it seems within all of my steps, Two opposing sides should intertwine.

We’ve been circling round, Losing all we’ve found, Time is all your own when you’re alone. To suffer my state, That unrelenting ache, Which of us is not so proud to break, and speak? Where I begin, My oldest sin, Yet still I’ve done this all again. Silence my voice, As if this was my choice, Wander on, I’ll soon be gone. Turn back my head, See if you’re still there, As if I would be able now to speak, and share, Stripped down and bare, I’ll sing you my nightmare, Of the one who showed me how to care. You’ll move along, I’ll sing my song, This play I’ve known so well, so long. In silence deep, I’ll feign my sleep, But this lonesome dance has woken me. Stifled and still, Watching until, Slipping away, I know you will.

I've been havin' some hard travelin', I thought you knowed I've been havin' some hard travelin', way down the road I've been havin' some hard travelin', hard ramblin', hard gamblin' I've been havin' some hard travelin', lord. I've been ridin' them fast rattlers, I thought you knowed I've been ridin' them flat wheelers, way down the road I've been ridin' them blind passengers, dead-enders, kickin' up cinders I've been havin' some hard travelin', lord. I've been hittin' some hard-rock minin', I thought you knowed I've been leanin' on a pressure drill, way down the road Hammer flyin', air-hose suckin', six foot of mud and I shore been a muckin' And I've been hittin' some hard travelin', lord I've been hittin' some hard harvestin', I thought you knowed North Dakota to Kansas City, way down the road Cuttin' that wheat, stackin' that hay, and I'm tryin' make about a dollar a day And I've been havin' some hard travelin', lord. I've been working that Pittsburgh steel, I thought you knowed I've been a dumpin' that red-hot slag, way down the road I've been a blasting, I've been a firin', I've been a pourin' red-hot iron I've been hittin' some hard travelin', lord. I've been layin' in a hard-rock jail, I thought you knowed I've been a laying out 90 days, way down the road Damned old judge, he said to me, "It's 90 days for vagrancy." And I've been hittin' some hard travelin', lord. I've been walking that Lincoln highway, I thought you knowed, I've been hittin' that 66, way down the road Heavy load and a worried mind, lookin' for a woman that's hard to find, I've been hittin' some hard travelin', lord.

You'll never keep me around, I was born a rambling man, Far away I'm ever bound. Carrying all the things I've seen, In my pocket full of strings, In the darkness of my dreams. Well who would sing a song for you? With all the people you've made blue, Now I've seen the things you do. Wasted time, Wasted mind, Walking circles seeing blind, The curse of letting yourself in. Hear that spirit call my name, I'm always one step ahead, of my shame. Yes I was taught not to speak in vain. So I always leave before my shame. Apathy is how I grow, Born to some indifferent flow, Where it ends I'll never know. Trespass a stillness I can't bear, Settled in my own nowhere, Always between and never there! I feel enough to get by, My heart will never open wide, Nothing to me nothing inside. Well I've been down that road before, Hell I even gave the tour, But I'll go down there no more. Hear that spirit call my name, I'm always one step ahead, of my shame. Yes I was taught not to speak in vain. So I always leave before my shame. Blessed are us few who were born with the blues, When you break down we'll break through. When push comes to shove comes to falling in love, What the hell will you do? Blessed are us few who were born with the blues, When you break down we'll break through. When push comes to shove comes to falling in love, What the hell you gonna do? Hear that spirit call my name, I'm always one step ahead, of my shame. Yes I was taught, no, not to speak in vain, So I always leave before my shame.

Opened Up 04:47
From my own veins, The same old drain in all of this, Your swollen cry, Told me I'd live but bled my dry. Had I you wrong? Your empty words just write my song, And thinking how, I ever cared, it's useless now. Only begun, At least I'm told that I'm still young, Though eyes betray, The seamless grind of my decay. Were you there or simply passing? Did I fool myself again? This darkened smile lets me know, I've misused this fragile scene. The sky hangs low, All closing in, nowhere to go. And I could see, The flames below call out for me. My freedom gained, I sleep in sin and wake all stained, I gaze the sun, And laugh about all I have done, And laugh about all I have done, And laugh about all I have done.

Found our fire by the sea, Burning tides were given me, None could see the things we saw, Disappearing from the shore. Weaving yourself through my soul, All you had done soon would show, In the night I felt you there, Sunset caress, I know where. High on hills I knew I'd be, Worked all my days to be free, Fresh faced in the sea we stood, Lived because we believed we could. Buried all my sins at sea, Told my story to the trees, Gathered round I heard them speak, Witnesses of our release. Every limit of my sight, Freeing me from every flight, Carried down by rhythm's tide, Waking in the savior's night. In your night I stayed, Silent I remained, On your shores I'll stray, All my days, All my days. Caught me between dreams, Pulled me out to sea, Given to this scene, Blessed are we, Blessed are we, Blessed are we. On the waves I danced, Melody by chance, Last light was made of songs we played, To lose our pain. Fought so hard to sing, You words that took me in, But thought is never kind to those who try, Not to be blind. Sorrow stripped and torn, Saved before the dawn, Keep your day a while, I'll not mourn, Of this I'm sure.

‘Sam Jefferson offers a sound that invites the listener on an introspective journey…His interpretation of William Blake’s ‘The Angel’ sounds like the perfectly natural complement to a poem already charged with spiritual emotion…’ (Brighton Unsigned). www.brightonunsigned.com/2016/03/sam-jefferson-rhythms-tide/
